February 20th, 2017 - My last visitors at Stonewall Jackson hospital in Lexington. Cindy Snuffer and Wilma Snuffer. Port is in and I will be released for home today. Chemo starts in March.

Chip's spirits are very high. There is no doubt that Chip and his wife Judy are going to lick this disease.

It's apparent Chip and Judy have a huge following of friends and family who will be cheering them on.

Tough day today with nausea and a little vomit. Judy works part-time at a hospital in Roanoke. Only a couple of days a week. Today was one of those days. While taking Sterling outside an hour ago I passed out and fell off the porch. Only got scraped knee. He must be theatered as he chased the cows outside my fence. The sun was warm so just laid there in the grass socking it up. Had little trouble getting up. Judy leaves house @0700 and gets home about 1730. I take chemo every two weeks in Lexington Virginia. I plan to take a leave of absence from my Rotary Club today. Thanks for all you do for the WPHS 61 web site. Chip Schram

About the same. Starting chemo pills maybe after pet scan next week. Blood pressure has been too low recently - must take more water my doctor says. Can't put my stomach back together untill finish chemo. In the meantime I still must change my hanging sh*t bag every couple of hours. I do get short of breath when I walk 20 yards or more. Got off Chemo pills two weeks ago. Start new liver cancer drug August 4th. My taste buds returned four days ago. Eating like it is going out of style. Going to four day USAF SECURITY FORCES ASSOCIATION CONVENTION in Washington DC at end of month. We have 23,000 members plus and chapters in nearly every state. Judy and I will celebrate 46th wedding anniversary on August 21. We were married at Winter Park All Saint's Episcopal Church right after our WPHS 1971 reunion. Lots of you were there. Chan Muller was my best man and my sister Gretchen Schram Beck (WPHS 63) was Judy's bride's maid. LIFE IS GOOD!

I feel a need to remind Chip and others that Chip Schram was my very first friend in Winter Park, when we moved onto Virginia Court in 1953, near the Rollins Campus. We built bamboo rafts together (with bamboo taken from behind the Rollins Art Museum). We rode our bikes all over town. One time, we planned to camp overnight down near Dinky Dock; but my mom wouldn't let me. Chip's mom was okay with it. I went down to visit him after it got dark. Chip had built a campfire for himself, so we sat around and chatted until a policeman came driving up and questioned our presence there. He eventually left us alone. I went home, but chip stayed the night. Another time, Chip was spending a week at a summer camp, and I was invited by his mother to go visit once. We watched Chip give the visiting parents an 'official' demonstration of how to construct a life-saving vest by taking off your blue jeans, blowing air into the legs while treading water, and tying up the ends. I was duly impressed. At the age of ten, Chip was already clearly an 'outdoorsman'. We pretty much parted ways about age thirteen; but I wasn't surprised, years later, to learn that Chip Schram had a career as a decorated military guy. I already knew that he could make a raft out of confiscated materials, build a campfire and construct a life-saving vest out of anything handy. I hope this will bring him a smile. Neil Haldeman

That was so very nice of Neil to remember our youth together. He taught me the art of baseball "scrub" and how to wrastle on a floating dock at Dinky Dock. I don't think I ever won a wrastling math on that dock. We did alot of fishing together and took out his home made canoe called "The Okeefonokee Express" on Lake Virginia. He had older brothers who showed me a thing or two about how to be a high school teenager like "Frozi" on HAPPY DAYS. His mother was a good cook too. I hope one day he will return for a WPHS 61 reunion. Many classmates ask me about him all the time. We were best friends while I lived on Chase Ave (now Aloma Ave).

Eugene 'Chip' Schram, III

Eugene Charles “Chip” Schram III died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018.

The son of Eugene Charles Schram Jr. and Grace Carrington Schram, Chip was born on Feb. 2, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He grew up in Winter Park, Fla., where he attended Winter Park High School and graduated in the class of 1961. He was active in many extra-curricular activities, including Boy Scouts. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and he modeled his life on the scouting precepts of duty to God and country, service to others, and keeping physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Chip enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1961, and during his 30-year career he served at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La.; Wake Island; Southeast Asia; MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.; Ent Air Force Base in Colorado Springs; Roswell International Airport in Roswell, N.M.; Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas; Air Forces Iceland in Keflavik, Iceland; Langley Air Force Base in Hampton; Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County; Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas; and Allied Forces South in Naples, Italy.

In 1971, he married Judy Griffin, and he earned a BS degree from the University of Tampa and later a Master of Public Administration degree from Texas Christian University. He attained the rank of major as a Security Forces officer, having commanded several units, the largest of which was 880 strong.
After Chip’s retirement from the Air Force in 1991, he and Judy made their home in Lexington. They joined Grace Episcopal Church, and Chip began actively contributing to the community. He was a member of Lexington Sunrise Rotary; the Military Officers Association, also serving as vice president; Habitat for Humanity, also serving on the finance committee; the Fraternal Order of Police, Chapter 31;Lexington Police Foundation, also serving as board member; the Hospice Hustle Committee; and the U.S. Air Force Security Forces Association, Eagle Chapter.

He became more active in scouting, volunteering in many significant ways, including as district chairman for the Southern District, Stonewall Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). He was employed for several years by the BSA as the district executive for Bath, Allegany and Rockbridge County. He was inducted into the Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow, and he received the Silver Beaver Award in 2017.

Chip is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Griffin Schram; his two sons, Charles Michael Schram and wife Brandy, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Mark Peter Schram and wife LeAnne of Dripping Springs, Texas; four grandchildren, Bethany and Kenyon Schram, and Lauren and Marshal Schram; sister Gretchen Schram Beck and her husband Jeff of Elgin, Illinois; nieces Carrington Abernathy and Whitney Beck; goddaughter Cary Hastings and her brother Lee Stuart Hastings; godson Giles Cabe; and countless friends and acquaintances. A memorial service in celebration of Chip’s life will take place at Grace Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 2, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Boy Scouts of America, Southern District, Stonewall Jackson Area Council, 801 Hopeman Parkway, Waynesboro, VA 22980;or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450; or Grace Episcopal Church, 123 W. Maybe the fact that I've either written or published more than 15,000 obituaries now, the process is beginning to bother me. And so it is that the recent death of Chip Schram of Lexington falls into the category of "we've just lost one heck of a great man." The well-known Boy Scout leader was a seasoned Air Force veteran, patriot and was possessed of a wonderful common sense attitude. We need such men in our lives and in our communities. My sincere condolences to his family. He touched all our lives with a gentility, a sense of fairness and competence. We shall miss him a great deal.
