"The Durango Kid (actor
Charles Starrett) was my boyhood idol. He made 65
films as Durango. I sought him out in 1970 (he retired
from movies in 1952 after making 179 films, all starring
roles, mostly at Columbia), interviewed him and we
remained friends until his death in 1986. I became
his latter day "agent" and promised to keep
The Durango Kid riding as long as I do. I began reprinting
the Durango comics in the 1980's and featured him
in 71 issues of BEST OF THE WEST. Starrett was a great
guy and got me started in going to film festivals
which, essentially, changed my life. I bought my first
DURANGO KID comic in 1949 the same day I saw my first
Durango movie. I collect Durango comics (have them
all), movies, posters, photos, press books, etc. A
big painting that I did of him hangs in my movie room.
That pic you posted was taken in WP in 1951. I was
still living in Pennsylvania but was visiting grandparents
in WP. I brought the latest issue of Durango as company.
Probably more than you wanted to know." Bill |
