WPHS Web Site

HOW IT ALL BEGAN!     The mention of the creation of an alumni web site occurred at the 40th class reunion, June, 2001. The site was created and online by July 1st. Ten percent of our classmates are still missing or unaccounted for. Those we have located or relocated, along with all those we have e-mail addresses for, will receive an e-mail with a link to the 3rd annual newsletter. Those we do not e-connect with will receive, via USPS, their own copy of the 3rd annual WPHS Class of 1961 Alumni Web Site newsletter with a brief narrative of the news of this past year as it pertains to classmates.

NEWEST UPDATES!   This web page continues to be the most up-to-date page in the entire web site. By visiting the Updates web page at the start of your 'return' visit you will find posted the most recently added information. Additionally, you will find links to 'notices' posted to the web site, copies of e-mails sent out by the web site committee, the link to the Obituary web page, and links to other web pages of interest incorporated within the site.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING DURING 2003-2004?
This past year there were many classmates who were reunited as a result of the connectivity your alumni web site has created. Below you will find links to a few mini-events, and more!
Thanks to supportive classmates - The alumni web site will remain online for two more years. Contributions were made by classmates attending the first mini-reunion in Georgia back in August, 2003. As a result, we felt it was only right to welcome contributions from those classmates who wanted to help defray the costs incurred by Bill, Mary and Anne for the past 2 years. Because classmates did not ask for this site it meant even more to your web site committee when the money started to roll in. Contributions are being sent directly to Bill Ronay. He maintains the web site fund. Contributions cover not only the cost of space on the internet and our own domain name, but also the cost of postage and supplies used to mail newsletters to classmates who we are not e-connected to. Thanks much!
Social Circle, Georgia, 8/9/2003 - A mini-reunion was hosted by Bill Ronay and his wife Camille with a luncheon at the Blue Willow Inn. The group who gathered were Bill, Larry Fennelly, Lynn Ricks, Mary Sheldon, Deanna Dudley, Connie Shoup, Jeannie Jones, Dick Bergen, Jeanne Williams, Ronnie Peacock, Susan Carter and Polly Gouck.      Three Old Friends Reunite, 9/13/2003 - Connie Shoup , Mary Carter and Jeanne Williams met in Atlanta Saturday afternoon at the home of Mary's daughter. Mary had come up from Boca Raton for her granddaughter's birthday, so they decided to meet. Click HERE.
Mini Reunion at Chili's, 9/17/2003 - September 17, 2003 a group from the class of 1963 met to welcome Cathy Patch to Orlando. Cathy contacted classmate Bob Cross who made arrangements for the gathering. The WPHS class of 1963 is hosted their 40th reunion this year. Click HERE to see who attended the mini-reunion at Chili's.
Maitland Teen Center, 10/16/2003 - The OLD Maitland Teen Center group had a reunion Thursday evening, October 16th at Steak and Ale in Orlando. "The 'Center' is where Fred Hale, Bruce MacMillan, Ed Newton, Tom Tobin, Charlie Davis, Bob Cross and the late Jerry Hunter learned to dance along with so many others. Click HERE.
Holiday wishes were shared with classmates again this past Christmas via the web site. You can click HERE to view the 2003 wishes.
Bruce MacMillan Mini Reunion, 12/29/2003 - Bob Cross & Bruce had been best friends since the 8th grade and Bob knew Bruce's wife Karen Rothrock (Class of '61) since the 6th grade. Bob had not seen Bruce since 1976 and when he heard that Bruce was planning a trip to Orlando to visit his family, Bob thought IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER PARTY....
Social Circle, Georgia, 2/28/2004 - A second mini-reunion was hosted by Bill and Camille Ronay at the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia on February 28th. A few new 'faces' showed up including Susan Keller, Nancy Kimber, Chip Schram, Dave Rees, Nancy Ann Wrenn, Carol Cubbedge, Mary Phillips, Martha Husmann and Anne Laing. Click HERE to check out the festivities.
Vic Vermillion visited with classmates - Vic, Marcia Gruber, Anne Laing, Bob Cross, Sandra Cash, and Bob Finfrock talked about life in the Middle East, sports at Glenridge and WPHS, the first contact lenses, former classmates Lorraine McCloud, Aurora Morgan and others, our 'memories' and how our memories can get clouded, talk about a Rollins College statue that somehow ended up at WPHS in 1961... and much, much more. Click HERE. While here in the states Vic connected with Bob Craft, Bill Schwartz, Max Morris, Fred Grinnell and former classmate Bobby Johnson.
WPHS Picnic in the Park 2004 - WPHS hosted it's annual Picnic in the Park on Saturday, April 17th. The "All School Reunion" honored teachers, staff, students and community friends of WPHS. The community-wide celebration will be an annual event with games, food, clubs, sports, alumni and performing arts. Click HERE.
We have been told by Bruce Winslow ('67) that WPHS expects to have some type of reunion for all WPHS Alumni twice a year. In the fall, it will be during Football Homecoming and in the spring, it will be during WP "Heritage Days." In that way, WPHS can piggyback on the advertising centered around the other event. According to Bruce, these reunions are not meant to replace class reunions, only to offer another chance to get together. It is anticipated some classes may choose to have their reunions on the spring date, however. The point is to give everyone a firm date with plenty of advanced notice. Bruce Winslow heads up the Foundation at Winter Park High School.
With this information perhaps the Class of 1961 will organize and set up a table at each event.
Classmate participation is key to the success of the alumni web site. A special thanks goes out to Marcia Gruber, Linda Schmidt, Vic Vermillion, Bobby Cross, Charlie Cayll, David Riddle, Bill Ronay, Bill Schwartz and others for providing leads, making connections with 'lost' classmates, and providing more WPHS, Glenridge and Audubon memorabilia.       As always, a very special THANKS goes to Mary Phillips for her continued efforts made to locate lost classmates. Mary has narrowed the list of 'lost' classmates down to approximately 10%. She puts in many hours each week and Bill Ronay follows up with phone calls to each newly found classmate. Without their joint efforts this web site wouldn't have gotten off the ground.
The passing of three of our classmates this year has saddened our hearts. Carol Streep (Copeland) passed away December 1, 2003, after a prolonged illness. Ethel Posana "Bunnie" Pechin (McBride) passed away April 27, 2004 from complications due to gall bladder surgery. Regina Ann "Jeannie" Jones Russell passed away June 7, 2004 after fighting a long battle against breast cancer. Condolences go out to the families of these very special ladies.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Since the posting of this new web site classmates who have been disconnected from one another have made contact. Some have not only connected via the internet but have traveled from one home to another to visit with and to talk about all the years in between since high school.

Share with us stories of how you connected with a classmate via this web site. We want to hear from you. You can click HERE to read a bit about how the site has affected classmates.
We are looking for more pictures. Pictures and newspaper articles if you have any. Your web'mistress will be delighted to post the pictures to the web site along with your name for contributing. The pictures and their captions have made the web site the success that it is.
Don't forget, if you change your e-mail address you should contact Mary Phillips or Bill Ronay so they can update their records to ensure you receive the most recent e-mails from your classmates.
This web site does not update itself. We have tracked down a few classmates who forgot to contact us when e-mail addresses were changed. Help us eliminate broken links and undeliverable e-mails. Remember to contact us of any snail-mail or e-mail changes. Many thanks.
