I
have given up on my quest to catch a 30 pound Snook and
a 50 pound Redfish, however now I'm in search of the elusive
3 pound Speck.
I hadn't been Speck fishing in over 30 years when my friend
Larry Bishop asked me if I wanted to go. Since it had been
6 months since my last fishing trip I jumped at the chance
to go. We got an early start by meeting at the boat ramp
at 6AM. Just before daylight we headed down a curved river
at full throttle in a flats boat with a 90 hp motor. Please
keep in mind that it was still very dark as I tried to shout
above the roar of the motor and ask Larry how he could see
where we were going. In a calm voice Larry assured me that
he knew every turn in the river, about that time we hit
a log or an alligator. As we approached Lake Woodruff dawn
was appearing on the horizon. Larry gave me a quick lesson
on Speck fishing and soon we were casting jigs among the
lily pads. Action was good until about noon then slowed
for a few hours, during this time the motor sheared a pin
and we had to return to the ramp for a repair. Once the
repair was made we returned to the lake and continued casting.
We fished a few more hours until the sun was setting behind
the trees and night time was approaching fast. As darkness
fell upon us we once again raced back down the river towards
the ramp. We had 12 great hours on the water and Larry said
that in comparison to his other catches this year that our
trip was exceptional. We caught 50 Specks with the largest
one weighing 2 pounds. Larry didn't want any of the fish
so I purchased an electric fillet knife and spent 3 hours
cleaning fish. Can you spell Fish Fry ?
