Dear Pam:

Last year in school I barely scraped by in my studies. This year it is even harder than last. What can I do to improve my grades?

C MINUS

Dear C MINUS:

Your problem seems to be a talent for scraping when you need to dig. You'll find digging a litter deeper hard work but it does yield a more satisfactory harvest. Instead of seeing how little time you can put on an assignment try doing more than is required of you. Think of your studying as an investment you are making in yourself.

Dear Pam:

I have a problem that is bothering me a lot. When I am away from home, without my even trying, boys like me. But at Glenridge I just don't seem to click. What can I do?

WONDERING

Dear WONDERING:

Maybe you're trying too hard - and for reasons of popularity rather than genuine human interest. Boys, like girls, respond to real interest, consideration and friendliness. Stop trying to make conquests. Just be the kind of friend you'd like to have.

Dear Pam:

There is a boy in my dancing class I like a lot. He seems to like me, too, and we dance lots together. But at school he doesn't even say "hello". How can I make him like me?

PERPLEXED

Dear PERPLEXED:

You make "like me" sound like a trap into which you are trying to lure this fellow. Why? Thank your lucky stars he asks you to dance. Say a friendly, "hi" and forget the Great White Hunter technique. Some of the smarter boys are getting gal shy because of all this going steady stuff, which involves more time, money, and social monopoly than they like.
