Packed
away into moth balls are the victories, ties
and losses of the W.P.H.S. football team. To
Head Coach Bill Orr, his able assistant Bob
Mosher and the boys who gave up their free time
to participate in the sport they love, goes
one of the most if not the most successful football
season any Winter Park team has had in the history
of the school.
It
was stated by Orr at the beginning of the season
that the Parkers would win more games than they'd
lose. And truer words were never spoken, as
his Wildcats gave him an impressive 7-2-2 mark.
When
the season opened and the 'Cats traveled to
Bartow the troops were green. Orr and Mosher
realized this but they had confidence in their
boys. A job had to be done that night and it
was done. The Parkers fought a ruff, scrappy
team to a come from behind 14-14 tie.
In
the next game with Cocoa, Orr's men defeated
a Cocoa team 13-7 that went on to become champs
of the tough Sun Coast Conference.
The
next three games came at ease for Winter Park
as they trampled DeLand 18-0, Bishop Moore 47-0,
and New Smyrna 34-7.
Then
came one of the most important games of the
year. Sanford!!! Without the services of halfback
John Jane, the 'Cats went on to lose the contest
13-7, for their only regular season loss.
After
the Sanford loss the Parkers caught fire and
whipped two straight OBC teams, Leesburg (26-0),
and Lakeview (26-12). Now the 'Cats had compiled
a 6-1-1 mark, with two games remaining. Seabreeze
had proved that they were a threat to any teams
record, and they didn't stop when they played
the Parkers. Behind the charges of fullback
Bill Lager, the Sandcrabs mustered a 6-6 tie
from the Wildcats.
The
6-6 tie didn't discourage the Parkers. They
knew that the following week that they were
going to go to battle with a team that had romped
them the year before. Apopka was undefeated
and once tied coming into this game. They left
the game once defeated and once tied.
Winning
this game gave the Parkers the honor to play
in the 4th Annual Brahman Bowl classic. Orr's
men met a tough Auburndale bunch and fell to
them 25-6.
This
closed a successful season for the fighting
Wildcats. So to the 16 Seniors that departed
from the gridiron and the sophomores and juniors
that contributed to the seasons success, goes
a hearty thanks for making this a thrilling
and enjoyable "58" football season.
