Unknown to most WPHS students, there is in our midst a very active "Beat" generation. Recently these "cats" got together at their annual semester "Beatnik" party. Entertainment was furnished by various members of this active group. The different acts were appraised and the winning skit was presented a three-hundred pound red reindeer.
The cool combo of Gordon and Groover took the honors for the evenings talents. "Purring'" Gordon drawled in his softest tone, several popular poems, while "Windy" Groover provided the musical background with his much sought after "Tiny Tuba Tune".
Running a close second was "Throatie" Rosenburg singing her romantic rendition of "Come-On-A-My-House". For her admirable efforts, "Throatie" was awarded a black and white penguin statue.
The crowd was especially surprised to hear that "Soapy" Herron had again won the annual soapbox derby races held on our own Huntington Avenue. A rousing applause was given for "Soapy" and a toast was given for him by "Toastie" Weissenburger.
During the exciting dinner, a thrilling talk on "Let's Put A Beat Into The Classroom" was given by "Frantic" Helms. A few suggestions that "Frantic" made were: 1) jive up "Paradise Lost"; 2) put Silar Marner to music; and 3) recite spelling lessons with a definite beat.
Spurred on by "Frantic's" suggestions, "Tiny" Orr promised to discuss the human brain in a beat fashion if "Toot-Toot" Williams would provide the background music. At this point, "Toastie" Weisenburger made a toast to "Frantic's" stirring after-dinner speech.
Following the banquet, a huge ball was given in honor of "Twinkle-toes" Burke, who claimed the drummer, "Sticks" Mosher, beat the drums like her fifth period typing class beat on their typewriters. A few dancing lessons were given to "Twinkle-toes" by "Boppin'" Creech and 'Cha-Cha" Selling.
Seen on the dance floor doing the Shag were "Huckleberry" Israel, "Tappin'" Jordan, "Swinging'" Smith, and "Sprintin'" McGill.
While most of the party was on the dance floor, a rousing beat discussion was being carried on around the punch bowl. A few of these encircling the refreshments were "Munchin'" Gimon, "Chewin'" Spurrier, "Gulpin'" Evans, and "Grabs" Winslow.
