GROUND BREAKING

By Donna Newberry

THERE'S BIG DOINGS THIS WEEK IN WINTER PARK!! The Honorable Mayor Edward Gurney has proclaimed Saturday, April 15, 1961, as Winter Park Youth Center Day. In celebrating the day, the festivities will begin with a large parade originating at W.P.H.S. and terminating at the proposed site of the Winter Park Youth Center near Ward Park. At the ceremonies, Ken Wacker will preside as Master of Ceremonies and will introduce interesting speakers.
The cars will form at the school promptly at 10 a.m. and the parade will commence at 10:30 a.m. All clubs and individuals are urged to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the most original floats.
Anyone interested in entering a float, see Mr. Wayne Johnson who is in charge of the parade entries. Remember, all plans should be turned into Mr. Johnson by April 11.
WE MUST SUPPORT AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE WIN-TER PARK YOUTH CENTER in order to show the residents of Winter Park that the students are willing to sacrifice in order to get a Youth Center. The contractors have set an approximate date of 90 days for the center to be completed. If all goes well, the Center should be open for membership in early August. Let's go students -- SUPPORT THE WINTER PARK YOUTH CENTER BY ATTENDING THE GROUND BREAKING CERE-MONIES THIS SATURDAY.

Cats Stomp Five

The Wildcat baseball team, sporting a five game winning streak, are well on their way to the group four championship. Though early in the season, the Cats have successfully hit every pitcher they have faced, defeating Lakeview 13-3, Apopka 17-3, and Wildwood 11-1.
The winning pitcher for the Cats who faced Lakeview was Terry Williams, who gave up 6 hits, walked 2, and pitched 12 strike outs. Facing Apopka was Jackie Billingham who gave up 5 hits, walked 1, and 5 strike outs. Throwing for the Cats against Wildwood was Dewey Ramsby, who usually plays shortstop. Dewey gave up 2 hits, walked 1, and chucked 8 strike outs.
The big bats for the Cats this season are seniors Al Burris batting 542, and Rich Winslow batting 309. Most of the starting lineup are hitting the ball well and batting over 200. Williams hit a grand slam homer against Apopka to wrap the game up.
The Cats are playing good ball this year, due mainly to the senior experience. The roster holds 11 seniors, and only seven juniors and sophomores. Four of the seniors have been on the baseball roster since they were sophs. This can account for the hitting strength.
The Cats will face DeLand on the 11th, Bishop Moore on the 14th, and Colonial on the 15th. All of these games will be played at Harper Sheppard Field.

Michaels in the 220, Fleming in the shot put and again Michaels in the discus.
Just a day before this record meet, Winter Park placed second in the Boone Invitational. Boone won with 101-1/6 and Winter Park came up with 64-1/3. Other teams that placed were Melbourne with 48-1/2 and Ocala with 28 points.
The golf team met its first defeat at the hands of the DeLand Bulldogs. The tally card showed DeLand ahead with a score of 18-1/2 - 2. Gary Schroder was the only Wildcat winner at any time.
Good Luck to our tennis team on their first state wide tennis tournament this weekend up in Gainesville. We're proud of your record thus far. Six wins and no losses.

CLUBICITY
By Pamme Anderson

The Inter-Club Council has plans underway for their Beautification Project which is to be fittingly called "Weed Day". Time and careful examination have gone into the forming of this project, and any help from the student body of WPHS will be greatly appreciated. More news about this project will follow at a later date.
The Science Club has elected its officers for the '61-'62 school term. They are:
   President: Jim Stokes.
   Vice-President: John Hoche.
   Secretary: Mary Hoelle.
   Treasurer: Beth Harlow.
   Historian: Bob Jadwin.
There isn't much more to say at the moment about club activities. Why don't ya'll get busy and do somethin' spectacular; then write it down on a piece of paper and turn it in to me? It looks mighty good to see your name in print!!!
