Mourner's Bench
by J. Stephenson
Shades of blue. Next week is the one has been talking about -- the week of the Prom. Just think, now at long last there will be a really big "shew" going on around the school. Man, like aren't we all going to have a ball. Going, I hope? If you don't have a date for the Prom as of yet, don't forget Mrs. Ramsdell's "univac".   I only have a couple of gripes that might be of interest to some of the readers out there in video paper land. Here goes:    "Why are the sophomores permitted to attend the Prom, eventhough they have a Junior or Senior date? This should be discussed before the upper-classmen and have their opinions known. When I was a Sophomore I was not permitted to attend the Prom because it was a sacred event which was for upperclassmen only. Now that I am a Senior I have learned to appreciate and enjoy the Prom.
Since WPHS has so many fine actors and actresses, wouldn't it be a good idea to have our own Oscar awards.
Play it cool and have a ball, won't ya'll!!!!!

Weed Day Smash Success!! Inaugural Ball Great Success! These were the alternate headlines planned for this edition of the Wi-Pa-Hi-Sc. Unfortunately, it was totally impossible to use either heading because each should have read: "Inaugural Ball Flop" and "Weeds Still In Ground."

Why is there such a lack of interest in the school's functions? The Inaugural Ball which was held last Friday night to honor the newly elected officers of the Student Council was forced to close its doors at 9 o'clock. Only eight persons attended -- the six band members, Mrs. Ramsdell, and Bill McGinnis, retiring Student Council President. Where were those student Council members who passed the petition for the Inaugural Ball? Where were this years officers for whom the dance honored?
Another function poorly attended was "Weed Day". Although some clubs did a fine job in their beautification project, others failed because of lack of workers. It is often said the events run in three's -- will it be that this year's Junior-Senior Prom will also fizzle in the dust? No one can answer that question but you......
WPHS  Originates
Jr.   Honor   Society
Officers of the Winter Park chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 26 students of the new Maitland Junior High into the Junior National Honor Society. W.P.H.S. students assisting in the induction ceremony on April 12 were Larry Elam, Sharon Spelzhausen, John Hoche, Marty Grove, and Nancy Temple. They gave short speeches on the merits of scholarship, leadership, character, and service and conducted the ceremony complete with candles and ribbons. Sixteen 9th graders and ten 8th graders were tapped at this first induction.
Refreshments were served to parents and guests at the close of the ceremony.

It's up to you students as to whether or not the events during the rest of this year will be a SUCCESS or a WASTE OF TIME. Get on the ball and support our school!!!

Fads 'N Fashion
Has your smile lost its shine? According to statistics, no-shine lipstick are now in the "vogue". They are available in all colors, weird and otherwise, and it looks as if they are going to be a fad in fashions for a good while.
Fingertips are also in the summer spotlight. Many students are now seen wearing polish to match the new lipsticks. Linda Tindall and Ellen Igou, were two of the first to try out this new fad.
Swinging from fingertips to wrists, pastel moonstone bracelets and circle pins that resemble the scarab are in vogue. Girls seen wearing these attractive accessories are: Kathie Burke, Sue Sturges, Jean Welsh, Marthabelle Hussman, an Lynda Borden. Barbara Richardson has been seen sporting an unusual necklace made of seeds imported from Africa.
LIBRARY    NOTES
At the recent District V meeting of the Florida High School Library Council held at Boone, two Winter Park library assistants were honored. Claudia Foley was elected to head th edistrict organization for 1961-62 and Annette McDougald was selected to be the district's nominee for the office of State Historian.
Claudia will lead and represent the library councils of Orange, Osceola, Citrus, Seminole, Lake, Volusia, Sumter and Brevard counties. If Annette, who will be chairman of the Winter Park staff next year, is elected at the forthcoming state convention, both students will be members of the state Executive Board.
