   What is school?
A school is more than brick and mortar, more than classrooms and books and grade cards. A school is the smell of chalk dust, and the restless squeak of seats a moment before the tardy bell rings. It's a group of girls in the halls with their heads together over the latest grapevine news. It's the loneliness of walking by empty seats in a darkened auditorium and the sense of belonging that comes from hearing a friendly "Hi, Sue," or "Hello, Jay." A school is all of these and many more. For the real spirit of school lies not in the beauty of the campus nor in the newness of its buildings, but in the thoughts, and reactions of its students and faculty.
Jim Stokes, of the Class of '62 and a member of National Honor Society has received the single honor of being elected to the office of Lt. Governor of the Florida Key Club, Division 6.
Two weekends ago, the Key Clubs of Division Six met at a convention in Jacksonville. The officers of each club represented their respective schools. From the Key Club of WPHS were: Ed Fishback, Bill Phillips, Nat Turnbull, and Jim Stokes. Coach Orr, the sponsor of the club, and Mr. Myers, President of the Kiwanis organization, also went.
Jim Stokes was elected to the office of Lieutenant Governor of Division 6, running against David Herlong, nephew of Congressman Syd Herlong. The comment Jim had to make on winning this office was "Naturally, I am very happy to receive this honor; however, it is not only an honor for me, but for the whole club."

Teen Agers Code
1. Don't let your parents down. They brought you up.
2. Stop and think before you drink.
3. Ditch dirty thoughts fast, or they'll ditch you.
4. Showoff driving is juvenile. Don't act your age.
5. Be smart; obey. You'll give orders yourself some day.
6. Choose your friends carefully. You are what they are.
7. Choose a date fit for a mate.
8. Don't go steady unless you're ready.
9. Go to church regularly. God gives you a week. Give Him back an hour.
10. Live carefully. The soul you save may be your own.

The voting was so close, that three different ballots had to be cast before there was enough margin to determine the winner.
WPHS is proud to have had these boys represent our Key Club at this convention, and we are especially proud of Jim for receiving such a top honor. Congratulations, Jim!!

Dear Aunt Abyss
Dear Aunt Abyss,
Our Jr.-Sr. Prom is less than a month away, and I don't have a date. I know I'm not beautiful but I have a heart and feelings as any other girl. This is becoming very distressing. Please give me some advise.
                          "Plain Jane"
Dear "Plain Jane",
I know this is an important event in your life, but you must remember that boys 16 and 17 years old don't realize a girl's inside qualities. I'm sure that some day, when there are more important and exciting events, a boy will come along who will appreciate you for the wonderful person you are. Be patient with nature.
THOUGHT  FOR
THE  WEEK
Ideals are like stars — you will not succeed in touching them with your hands —
But like the seafarer on the desert of waters — choose them as your guide and you will reach your goal.
