"WE HONOR THE TRUTH"
NUMBER 15
WINTER PARK HIGH SCHOOL, WINTER PARK, FLORIDA
DECEMBER 15 , 1960

Basketball Preview
By
Chip Schram

Winter Park should start running in the winning column this winter with the fine basketball team that the Wildcats are producing.
Five lettermen are returning along with a few junior varsity grads to add plenty of punch to the W.P.H.S. cagers. Dewey Ramsby and Carl Dunn, both first string players last year, are back again this year to swish the baskets and the Wildcats to victory.
Other seniors playing this year are Allen Burris and Bob Danforth. Returning letter man junior, Gary Holmes, is also a helpful cager on the court. Other members of the team will be announced later. This years' strategy is not known as yet. You will recall that last year we used fast breaks for the basket and it really paid off. As for the up-coming game, it should be a great one because Leesburg has five letter men also returning as does Winter Park.
Our next two games are away, Leesburg and Bishop

Moore. The Bishop Moore game will be played at the Davis Armory.
Coach MacHardy thinks we'll have a fine team this year as far as spirit goes, so ya'll be on hand for our second game with the Leesburg Yellowjackets in Leesburg.
'60 FOOTBALL REVIEW
By Craig Jacobsen
Our uninspiring football season is over! (Some may breathe a sigh of relief), but the members of our team did show an immense amount of skill on the playing field. Although our touchdowns were few and far between, our offense did quite well against teams that had tremendous defensive capabilities.
Our offensive players have an impressive record. It would be pleasing to me, if it were possible to give credit to all members of our team for the great efforts that they put forth, but the lack of space forbids me from doing so.
In rushing yardage Myers was in the lead with 59 carries for a total of 269 yds. gained, Holland was next with 69 carries for a total of 243 yrds. gained, and finally King with 26 carries for a total of 98 yds. Ramsby was the leader in passing, for he completed 22 of 56 passes thrown for a total of 252 ydw. gaines although Collier and Billingham completed a greater amount of their passes. In yardage gained from catching passes Holland was the leader, with 13 catches for a total of 99 yds. gained, followed by Bridges with 5 passes caught for 78 yds. gained, and then Dokter with 5 passes caught for a gain of 56 yds.
In yds gained from punt returns Holland caught 9 and returned them for a total of 83 yds. In yds. gained from kick-off returns, Holland led with 11 returns for a total of 206 yds. gained, he was closely followed by Collier who had 7 returns with 109 yds. gained, Myers was right behind Collier with 6 returns for a total of 85 yds. Our team seemed to have "Fumbleitis" with 22 fumbleds, or 2 per game. King was the high point man with two touchdowns, Myers and Ramsby each scored one touchdown, Mooney completed two out of four extra point attempts for a total of two points.
Defensively we did fairly well. Mullins made a new school record with a spectacular 124 tackles in 10 games. Cash trailed him with 75, Holland had 45.
The final statistics for the season are as follows: There were 880 yds. gained in rushing, and there were 463 yds. gained in passing, to make the total yds. gained for the season 1343. There were only 65 first downs. We were quite adept at receiving penalities, however, for we had 455 yds. lost on account of them.

Intramurals

What's on the girls sport scene this six weeks? What else but basketball!
The girls had a short organizational meeting in the gym at which they elected four team captains from the girls present. The elected captains are Lee Van Wormer, Roberta Peters, Pat Brown, and Eleanor Swan. After the captains were elected, the remaining girls went to the team captain of their choice. Each captain signed up approximately 10 girls.
The girls have played a few games but due to the fact that one basket was broken it was necessary to have two teams play on half a court and shoot for the same basket. It was truly a different experience but proved to be lots of fun.

Fashion Cues

There's many a girl who will appreciate this comumn. I know that more than once I've sat there saying, "Now what shall I wear"?
There have been quite a number of teas lately and I think the smartest thing to wear to a tea is either a tailored sheath dress or a suit. Heels and gloves are a necessity, and a hat is optional. Add jewelry to your own choosing.
For church choose a basic wool sheath in your favorite winter color. This sheath can be dressed up or down to your need. A hat is desirable, with heels and gloves. Keep it simple and neat.

There's always a problem when it comes to dates. If its a sporty casual date wear either long pants or bermudas, with a matching blouse and sweater. If you're headed for a dance or to an indoor movie for a more quiet evening, wear a skirt and matching sweater, or your favorite school dress. The same goes for a basketball game. For a football game, a big bulky sweater and a skirt is appropriate.

That's all gals. Hope this little column will help you out some time.

CHRISTMAS IN FLA.

Bells and bells
Christmas trees
Cold weather
But no freeze

Holly through,
And mistletoe
Sant Claus
But no snow

Florida
Land of winter sun
No snowballs
But lotsa fun

Dear Santa

If I could, dear Santa, I'd like to warn
You of what I don't want on Christmas morn!
For instance, handkerchiefs all flowered and gay large medium or small
Blue, yellow, and Orange,
I'd be so happy on Christmas Day
If I'd find NO handkerchiefs at all!

And no belts, I'll say without further ado
For they are invariably marked size "32".
No bedroom slippers,
No bright colored socks,
Or things with locks.
For as soon as I grab it from under the tree
I begin the endless job of finding the key.

My wants are simple, so here is my plea,
Just leave some small token under the tree.
A simple pearl or diamond pin
And perfume like "Chanel" or even "My Sin".
There's cashmere too -- and let me think --
You could always leave the basic mink.

So dear Santa, I hope you'll recall.
These few things, and that is all!
Yours faithfully,
Susan Chace

Winter Wonders
By
Ann Spaulding

A snow flake drops from sky to limb
Only to melt in a sparkling form.
Of water, which in its turn
Changes to icicles that are born
To glow with magic - like a gem
Each branch and limb is bare and leafless,
Only the icicles make its gown,
     Hanging with magnitude and grace
While every twig is laiden down
With snow to make it lifeless.
How shrill and chilling wind will blow,

To still and to frost the earth and trees

To kill the joy of coming spring

When March will repeat its yearly tease

Of wind and rain to make a foe.

Who Me?
By
Dodi Simmerson

Mr. Henry Smith, one of our American History teachers, admits that he has actually forgotten how. He used to be a jazz drummer and still enjoys playing but doesn't intend becoming a professional. Maybe we can get him to play at some of our school dances, huh? As for a favorite expression and joke, he feels that the students would know more about that. Mr. Smith likes lobster cooked most any way. He likes tan socks and white shirts, but he doesn't like shaving lotion. Ugh!

Our American History teacher, with his family, plans to spend the Christmas holidays on his inlaws' farm in the northern part of Florida. He remembers spending a very enjoyable Christmas in Washington, D.C. but doesn't recall why. (???)
Mr. Smith was born in Newton, Massachusetts and attended Haverford College.
The Wi-Pa-Hi-Sc salutes you, Mr. Smith and wishes you (and the rest of the faculty) a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
