Marty
Wellinger and John Bordley were the recent winners in Winter Park
High School's division of the Elk's Leadership Contest.

of the Student Council, and a member of Science Club and Honor Society.
Marty is treasurer of the Jr. Class, a member of Tri-Hi-Y, and a
1960-61 member of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Both of these
students are quite active in Church as well as civic affairs.
The school winners received a $25.00 savings bond
and the chance to represent Winter Park in the State Contest which
began March 15 in Tallahassee.

D.E.
CLASSES BEGIN
|
It's
the beginning of a six weeks course in drivers education. This six
weeks will be devoted to classroom work. The course will be taught
in the classroom by Miss Parks, while Mr. Bill Yocum will teach actual
behind-the-wheel training.
Safe driving will be stressed and students will
learn such things as the obligations of drivers involved in an accident,
the causes of skids due to driver failure, the right-of-way rules,
and the basic speed rule.
The course will be repeated on April 24. Also all
who do not have the opportunity to take behind-the-wheel training
this year can do so this summer. |
|
Persons
employing domestic help are required by law to report the earnings
of each such employee to whom they pay cash wages of $50 or more during
a calendar quarter of the year. |

Teacher
of the Week
|
Miss
Parks, WPHS's drivers' training teacher, was born in West Plains,
Missouri, but has lived here in Florida for 32 years! She has visited
most of the national parks in the West, Mexico and Canada.
Miss Parks' hobbies are driving and food. In her
spare time ... She like to read and dance ... and she loves music!
Miss Parks has two very embarrassing moments ...
once when a highway patrolman stopped her coming back from teaching
her first drivers' education class at McCoy Air Force Base. Her other
embarrassing moment was when she locked her car keys in her car. Did
you use a car-opener, Miss Parks?
The Wi-Pa-Hi-Sc salutes you, Miss Parks, as our
Teacher of the Week!! |

second annual Math contest was held here Monday, March 13, 1961.

Bradford, both Seniors, were runners-up. George Williams, a junior,
will be an alternate. All four will represent W.P.H.S. at the County
Math Contest on March 23, 1961 at O.J.C.
The purpose of this Math contest is to find those

interest and ability in Math.
This contest is open to all students of Math in
the public and private Senior high schools of Orange County who
have had a minimum of one and one-half years of algebra and one

Winter
Park attended its first swim meet at Leesburg last Tuesday. Although
the Winter Park boys were ahead until the last, Leesburg took the
meet 47 points to 45.
Senior Gary Gardner won the 400 yard free style,
Dave Herold came in 3rd in the 200 yard free style, and Fred Robinson
placed second in the 100 and 200 yard free style. In the 50 yard free
style, Bob Finfrock and David Ellis-Brown took 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Bob also won the 100 yard backstroke.
In the diving competition, Winter Park's own John
Miller took first place (mainly because Leesburg had no diving entries).
Junior Jim Stokes won the 100 yard butterfly and individual medley.
Tony Donnaud tore away with 3rd place in the individual medley, even
under the handicap of swimming in the wrong lane. Also Chuck Libby
won the 100 yard breast stroke.
It looks like we all are in for a round of entertainment.
"Oklahoma" is being presented at good old WPHS and MGM's
GORGO has been unleashed for a current Central Florida Premiere. If
these two aren't your cup of expresso there's always the talented
Don Hoffman Show. Speaking of talent, ex-Parker Helen Grabber has
captured the lead roll in "Pride and Prejudice," the school
play at North High in Hagerston, MD. Good luck, Doll! (Galaxy International
Pictures discovered her first.) |

Dear
Aunt Abyss
By Dodi Simmerson

Dear
Aunt Abyss,
What
am I going to do? My steady girlfriend is constantly singing into
my ear while we're dancing. This is very embarking, especially when
she gets carried away! T.C.
Dear T.C.,
Fall in love and forget it (or use ear plugs).
Dear Aunt Abyss,
I eat constantly! I am 15 years old and weigh 156
pounds. I have tried pills, shots, strict diets, and even going for
two days without a bite to eat. This problem is getting worse everyday.
Can you help me? Tubs
Dear Tubs,
Let's streamline the diet to fresh vegetables and
fruits instead of banana splits and potato chips. And try exercising
the muscles of the body instead of the mouth!!! |
