BOY'S STATE
By Dodi Simmerson
Every
year, the Woman's Auxiliary and the American Legion sponsor two students
from WPHS to participate in the activities of the state government in
Tallahassee for one week.
These outstanding students have the access to the
House of Representatives and the Senate as well as the authority to
produce and pass their own bills. They carry on the activities concerning
city, county, and state offices. Participating in many fun-filled rallies
and campaigns, these kids enjoy the excitement of voting for their state
cabinet officers and governor.
To be chosen to represent our school is, indeed, a
great privilege and honor. One must be individual, well-liked, possess
qualities of leadership, and have above-average scholastic aptitude.
The Si-Pa-Hi-Sc expresses congratulations to Mike
Kelly and Tim Darrah who will be attending Boy's State, June 18-24.
Civitan
Awards
Bill
McGinnis placed first and Ed Fishback placed second in the Winter Park
Civitan Essay Contest. On the state level Bill placed 6th. Bill won
$100 for his Civitan Essay and Ed won $50.00. Congratulations
Bill and Ed.

Hoche Wins
Math Award
by Pamme
Anderson
As
most of you know, John Hoche, Junior at WPHS, won top honors in the
District Mathematics Contest held at Rollins College on Saturday, May
6th. Eleven counties were represented in this contest, with the top
math talent competing. Each contestant was selected by the math department
and the principal of his or her school.
John won a scholarship to the Rollins Summer Math
Camp. Where he will penetrate into the higher realms of mathematics.
John is an extremely modest person, for having won
as many honors as he has. He is very active in the school band, and
is really "witched" on the drums. Even though John is a soft-spoken
person, he reflects a sense of friendliness. A rippling sense of humor
is one of the lad's many, many virtues.
All through school, John has kept an excellent scholastic
record, and is at present a member of the WPHS chapter of the National
Honor Society. He appeared in the Junior Class play, "Best Foot
Forward."
Versatility is John's main virtue. He not only is
good at nearly anything he tries, he is usually outstanding at whatever
he attempts.
Hats off to you, John!!! WPHS is behind you all the
way, and we all feel confident that you'll go far in life!!!
