CATS TAKE
DIST. IV BERTH
The
Wildcat's, Orange Belt Conference champions, successfully defeated Oak
Ridge, St. Cloud, and Apopka in the class "A" sub-group tournament
to gain a berth in the District's bid to go to state. Deland, Daytona
Seabreeze and Mount Dora or Eustis will be the other three teams participating
in the playoffs, which start today, to determine which team will represent
district IV in the state meet.
Senior right hander Dewey Ramsby turned in a five-hit
pitching performance; this performance coupled with the timely hitting
of Jackie Billingham and Allan Burris successfully turned back the Oakridge
Pioneers by a score of 8-2.
Rallying in the bottom of the seventh inning for three
runs, the Cats squeezed past St. Cloud by a score of 4-3. Clutch hits
by Billingham and Ramsby, drove across the tying and winning runs respectively.
Pitcher, Terry Williams, helped wrap up his own game by getting three
hits for four trips to the plate.
The game was all but over in the bottom of the first
inning as the Cats bombed the Apopka Blue Darters with eleven runs in
their first trip to the plate. Three players in the Cats' line-up got
two hits for two trips to the plate in the first inning alone. The Cats
went on to blank the Apopka nine 19-0 in five innings. Billingham, the
pitcher, retired the first 11 batters before giving up two hits in the
fifth. Billingham is the first WP pitcher in the last 5 years to experience
ten wins in one season.

Teacher
of Week
by Dodi
Simmerson
Miss Kate Wharton, the librarian for
WPHS, was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and attended both Middle
Tennessee State College and George Peabody College where she received
her library degree.
Miss Wharton has always liked books and people. In
her capacity as librarian she has the opportunity of enjoying both.
But our librarian has one noted pet peeve: People who can't be quiet!!
Her most embarrassing moment? A few dinner engagements
she made which she forgot until several weeks later.
? ? ? ? years ago, a baby who was to become coach
of WPHS descended upon the little, quiet (until he was born) city of
Cleveland, Ohio. The city was never the same again!
In all seriousness, Coach Mosher has been a great
addition to our school. Since he has been coaching, our boys haven't
lost an OBC Track Tournament. Coach Mosher attended Kent State and Stetson
where he received his BS degree in Physical Education.
This week the Wi-Pa-Hi-Sc salutes both Miss Wharton
and Coach Mosher.

Cat's Trackmen
Take Honors
Winning
four firsts and three seconds, the Winter Park Wildcats grabbed top
honors in the annual district meet held at Boone, May 6. WPHS, by virtue
of first and second place winners, sent 11 men to the state track meet
May 13-14. The point hungry Cats' scored 58-2/4 points to Leesburg's
45. Colonial, Sanford, Seabreeze trailed with 34, 32, and 29 points
respectively.
Winter Park and Leesburg each won four events but
two of the Wildcats victories were in relays, where the points mount
up.
Many state records should be broken at the meet held
at Gainesville. Two boys, Glenn Martin from Colonial and Roger Orrel
from Seabreeze, both beat the state record in the broad jump and the
shot put respectively. These records in order to be official, however,
must be beaten at a state meet to earn any recognition.
Those who shone for the Cats' were: Richard Giannini
in the discus, Greg Holland in the 440, and Ray Myers, Eric Firchow,
Jim Fleming, Pat Phillips, Larry Elam and Holland who all ran in the
first place relays.
Second place winners were: Jim Fleming in the shot,
Carl Dunn in the high jump and the 880 relay team and Larry Elam in
the 440 dash. Third place winners included Frank Ferguson and Bill Michaels.
Fourth place winners were Lambert, Hoffman, and Dunn. Carol placed in
the pole vault and was followed by Jim Ferguson and Leslie King in 4,
5, and 6 order.
