WINTER PARK HIGH SCHOOL, WINTER PARK, FLORIDA

Program Set Up
by Helen Grabber
Announced last week was the Monitor program which is being offered to Juniors and SENIORS from W.P.H.S. This very worthwhile program deals with the training of high school students in the care of handicapped children. It is sponsored by the Jaycee Wives Club of Orlando under the supervision of the United Cerebral Palsy Association.
Students participating will be given a chance to step into the world of handicapped children; a world so different from our own. Professional doctors and therapists will be on hand to instruct the classes, and the students will be able to meet some of the afflicted children used in demonstrations.
The classes will be given for 8 consecutive weeks, running 1-1/2 hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, after school. At the end of the course, an examination will be given and all those who successfully complete the course will graduate in a joint ceremony. The able chairman for Winter Park is Mrs. Kenneth Mason and all students who are interested are urged to contact her. You will be doing yourself and your community a great service!
The Sophomore Side
The political campaign has even reached the sophomores. Gary DeVane was seen sporting a "John Kennedy" last week. In true Kennedy style, Gary's hair was swept back in an exact replica of the Democratic candidate's youthful style. No offense, Gary, but we think it looks better on Kennedy.
The 70 members of the W.C.W. Tri-Hi-Y elected officers last week. Those elected were Mary Cash, President; Peggy Frome, Secretary; Diane Davich, Treasurer; and Chip Furr, Chaplain. Congrats, gals! The sophomore Hi-Y also elected officers recently. According to Lynn Kelly, Chaplain; the other officers are Dan Gribben, President; Jan Kyle, Vice President; Barry Milstead, Secretary; and Dick Wannall, Treasurer. Lots of luck to all.
Sophomore birthday gals so far this month include Janet Squillante and Frances Glover. Many Happy Returns.
The Spanish Club sends out an appeal for all Spanish students who are interested in joining them. For only a dollar you are entitled to membership. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month and refreshments are served. Planned for the year is a trip to Ybor City (near Tampa) and a pinata party. Venga.

What about this week? I gotta do something in here to earn a grade, so you'll have to put up with it. You might even do one better. Write a letter to my editor and tell her how much you enjoy (for lack of a better word) my column and this will guarantee me a good grade. It will guarantee you that you won't have to put up with me or this column again next year.
There sure isn't any good sports news this week, with the varsity team losing to Bishop Moore, and our cross country team losing it's first meet after going undefeated all last season. So far the only laurels being brought home are by J.V. football squad. They defeated Wildwood J.V. squad last week down at Ward Lake. The only problem that the "Baby Cats" had, was keeping Kevin McPherson's head above water.
I'm afraid I've got a little bad news for you sports fans. Chan Muller has been taken out of the lineup. It's not that the team minded getting pinched in the huddle, it's just that they couldn't keep him from winking at the referee. (No offense, Chan.) Keep up the good work fella. We know that the wink is an old football injury.
Here's a tip for you indoor sportsmen. Stay alert. They just hired another cop at the Winter Park Drive-In.
The Sophomore Side
(Continued.)
Last week Cathy Patch of Charlotte Perogoy's "Men-aces" made a basket while playing volleyball. She hit the ball properly and it just thumped into the basket. However they lost the point and the game. Volleyball is finished for the year and badminton will start next week. Get out your racket and join the gang!
In answer to the question about radios ... after seeing all the radios here for the world series, the only answer is YES! Is it?
Three cheers for the JV football team. Their 19-0 victory over Wildwood in the rain was the most! Beat Sanford!
J.V. Cats Down
Wildwood 19-0
The Wildwood Junior Varsity was dealt its defeat of the season by the "Baby Cats" of Winter Park. The Winter Park "eleven" completely dominated the game from early in the first quarter when Randy Hall took a pass from Quarterback Roy Davis, and romped fifteen yards for the first score of the ball game. Reynolds, J.V. conversion ace, who was injured in the team's first tilt with Colonial, raised the score to seven. It was Winter Park's game from then on. Randy Hall's fine punting exhibition kept them in their own territory and the defensive squad saw that they stayed there. Wildwood failed to make a single first down until late in the second quarter.
The rain during half time did not seem to dampen the spirits of the Cats. They returned to score again, this time with a ground attack. Fullback Kevin McPherson, was the spearhead of this assault along with halfback Jeff Arnold. Roy Davis displayed his fine ability running on several occasions, rolling out for a pass and then skirting the sideline for good yardage.
The great climax of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Jim Memory, defensive end, broke through and intercepted a lateral ran twenty yards for a third Wildcat touchdown. Memory also turned in a fine defensive effort in the preceding game against Bishop Moore.
Unless a rash of injuries hampers the "Baby Cats", they should have a very successful season.
