Fads And Fashions
Fads seen around Winter Park this year include higher skirts, more eye make-up (sometimes too much for school), dirty, dirty tennis shoes referred to as "tennies", large straw bags, hair changing colors, and a profuse number of scarab bracelets.
Along the fashion line, the first day of school showed many new summer outfits. T-strap dresses are still most stylish, as proved by Susan Gray in a white cotton silk, and Sue Sturges in a red print creation.
Fran Ussery wore a deep purple outfit which had a round-neck overblouse. Suzie Miller wore a smart brown checked outfit which also had an overblouse ... which means that overblouses will be stylish this year.
Madras is once again a season highlight. Ann Spaulding is the owner of a chic varicolored madras sheath which she made! The simplicity of the dress is offset by a gold circle pin and gold bracelets. Dottie Bell is the proud wearer of a sharp madras skirt which she compliments with a white dacron blouse.
Boys, too, are fashionable. Stuart Smith, and his cool seersucker shirts, can be seen roaming around the campus. Freddie Good has an ivy madras jacket, "Dumbo" Matthews, a madras shirt which he wears with blue pin stripe pants, and Ken Minameyer looks like a "fashion plate" in his blue Continental pants with matching blue print shirt. Keep up the good looks, fellows!
Dance Concludes Howdy Week Celebrations
by Sue Trapnell
Anne Laing
A "howdy" and a handshake was the indication of a new school year at Winter Park High School on Opening day. The traditional Howdy Week began August 31, and ended September 2nd with a dance held in the school cafeteria.
On Wednesday, the first day of school, all the students were given cards with their names and section numbers printed on them. These cards were to introduce the newly enrolled to the old students. Because of the large number of students presently enrolled at Winter Park High, they were unable to all meet in the auditorium, where their schedule cards would have been issued. Instead, the seniors met in the auditorium, the juniors in the lunchroom, and the sophomores in the gymnasium.
The first day of school was not the mass of utter confusion so often identified with opening day. Students entering classes with these words, "I couldn't find my room," were accepted and told that they would be expected on time for the rest of the school year. The second day still some "tardies", as the first.
Friday seemed to find everyone in order, that is if you didn't venture in the office. Poor "Mr. Fitz"!! The line of students wanting schedule changes never seemed to stop pouring in.
Friday night the conclusion of Howdy Week bopped in with music furnished by the Gators at the Howdy Dance. The dance was held in the school cafeteria and the free refreshments were complements of the new student council. Among the cabinet members and officers there with their dates were: Sandy Cash with Bill Lane, a Boone student, Connie Shoup with graduate Chet Cornwall, Chan Muller and Susan Carter, Suzie Miller and Bob Wiser. Other present were Max Morris, John Bordley, Susan Chace, and Lynn Furr. The parents and teachers who chaperoned were Mrs. and Mrs. Bordley, Mrs. and Mrs. Horvath, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mrs. and Mrs. Eloquin. Their time was greatly appreciated.
A number of former WPHS students were seen reminiscing and renewing old friendships. These included Linda Prevatt and Bill Blackburn, Bill Rosenfelt with Anne Laing, Colin Crews and his steady Donna Shaw, Joanne Horvath and athletic star Mike Mosher.
It was fine to see so many sophomores having a good time and meeting new people. The Howdy Week was a big success. As the year goes on, each student will get to know more and more students in class and especially at the games. But many times friendships begin with cheerful smiles and casual "hello's" in the halls. If we are going to have the colorful school spirit we want, we have to start out with "howdy's" and handshakes. Let's make Winter Park High a school of friendliness and high school spirit. We're off to a good start, so keep it up.
   Attending the Howdy Dance were:
Leslie White, Chad Price, Gerry DeVane, Steve Wolfe, Randy Hall, Maurine Doggett, Susan Chace, Fred Grinnell, Martha Baker, Ray Myers, Bill McGinnis, George Mayo, Dale Potter and Woody Leonard.
