What

What teacher met Dr. Albert Schweitzer?
Born in Cohasett, Massachusetts, Mrs. Mernard, Winter
Park's new French teacher, "Adores" Florida for its warm
weather.
She has taught French "many" years, teaching
in Massachusetts after going to the University of New Hampshire.
Mrs. Menard has, indeed, met the great. The most
exciting event in her life was when she met Dr. Albert Schweitzer
on a liner to France. He asked her questions about herself and did
not speak of his own great works. This proves that the greater they
come the more humble they are. |

Hi! This is your busy
reporter, Susi, beinging you the latest news and gossip concerning
students here at good old Winter Park.
A large open house was given at the beautiful new
Officer's Club at the Orlando Air Force Base during July. The hostesses
were Kay Harris, Joanne Cunningham, Linda Tindall, and alumni Monika
Denning and Charlyne Peters. Many, many guests attended, making this
a swinging affair!
Winter Park was very well represented at the Blue
Ridge Assembly in North Carolina. Janie Mitchell, Pat Erie, Susan
Gray, Fran Ussery, Marty Wellinger, and Sandy Cash were among those
there. Also, Judy Kirkpatric, Mary Cash, Bonnie Boone, Elnora Wright,
Nancy Wrenn, Ann Jenkins, and Betsy Britten were seen among the representatives.
Brenda O'Steen, Towayam editor, and the Towayam
business manager, JoAnne Horvath, spent a week in Gainesville, learning
more about the making of an annual.
Winter Park traveled far and wide during their short-lived
vacations. Heather Marwick and Robin McKenzie both visited in Canada.
In the opposite direction, JoAnn Ross spent several days in Bimini,
an island in the Caribbean. Frank Ferguson is still in Europe as the
result of being chosen one of the two Florida delegates to the World
Youth Conference in Holland. Pat Stephenson went to Alabama, Lee Van
Wormer saw the lights in Oregon, Dewey Ramsby and Richard Giannini
drove to New York, and Carolyn Rayburn had a cool time in the "blue-grass
state", Kentucky. |

New
Season's Lineup
by Leroy Frick
|
Well
Cats, it's going to be a long hard season, but no need
to be pessimistic. With a little bit of luck and a lot
of hard work the WP eleven should come up on top in the
season's first tilt at Melbourne on the 23rd of September.
Despite the lack of varsity experience,
the Cats are shaping up fast. With only nine varsity players
returning this season there will be quite a few gaps to
fill. Fortunately the line should not suffer. With veterans
Richard Giannini, Buster Judy, Gene Mooney, Frank Ferguson,
and Chan Muller, supplemented by sophomore Clark Lambert
and J.V. linemen Tim Hartung and David Pughe, the line
should shape up into an efficient and powerful unit.
|
|
|
The backfield, coached by Bob Mosher, should also
develop into a well balanced unit. Greg Holland,
Max Morris, Ray Myers, and Gary Dokter, second string
varsity backfiend last year, saw a good deal of
action due to injuries of other players during the
season. This experience along with J.V. players
Jim Rich, John Prevatt, and Glenridge star Net Whitner
should give us the necessary depth in case of any
unforseen accidents to the starters. Billy Collier
is also in contention for the quarterback spot along
with Holland.
Tim Hartung and Clark Lambert
are practicing kickoffs and Gene Mooney and Mike
Born will be handling the extra points.
This is the tam this year. Again,
it will be a long season with few injuries (we hope).
But with many students and fans backing the team,
it will have a better chance for the spotlight. |

Susi's
Scoops (Continued.) |
While many relaxed
this summer, still others were hard at work. These lucky
or unlucky ones, as the case may be, were Sara Moores,
who "Played" receptionist, Sharon O'Neal, Jean
Welch, Ray Myers and John Prevatt who spent their spare
hours working at the Orlando Youth Center. (Tell us all
about it, John!)
SharonWhite isa happy girl now that
Steve Stevenson has left the hospital! Welcome back, Steve,
it's good to see you hobbling around our hallowed halls.
Linda Myrick was the lovely hostess
at a small luncheon honoring Carole Lober, who is soon
departing for Fairfax Hall, a Girl's school in Virginia.
Chicken salad was served, after which followed ice cream
parfaits and cookies for dessert. Those bidding Carole
a fond fairewell were Linda Tindall, Jo Ann Ross, Julie
Haynie, Marty Wellinger, and Susan Chace. |
|
|
Simmie Wrenn, Tim Bassler, Nancy Wrenn,
and Sue Trapnell all studied at Mars Hill College in the
gorgeous hills of North Carolina this summer. The setting
was a beautiful one for the nine-week study course.
Sharon Hayes, Lynn Furr, Susan Chace,
Suzie Miller, and one lone boy, Ronnie Peacock were all
busy as bees at the Student Council Convention in Gainesville
during July. |

TODAY'S DOUBLE DIP
Have you heard about the drunk who was
lost; went into a phone booth to call his wife, and when
asked where he was said, "lemme look." In a
minute he returned with "I'm at the corner of Walk
and Don't Walk!" |
