Coach Gordon
Obtains Masters
This summer Bill Gordon, well known baseball and football coach at WPHS, obtained his Master's degree in Education. Mr. Gordon, head of the math department, has spent the last three summers attending classes at Stetson University in DeLand.
The program consisted of thirty college semester hours in courses dealing with school law, school supervision, junior and senior high school curriculum, educational psychology and special reseach areas. By reaching this plateau, Mr. Gordon may now enter the administrative field of junior and senior high schools.
Mr. Gordon feels it has raised his proficiency as a teacher and increased his effectiveness. He believes that, if given the opportunity, every teacher should obtain his Master's in Education.
It might be noted that Mr. Gordon also did a seventy-five page thesis on the subject "The Head Football Coach in Florida's High Schools As Viewed by His Principal"!
Congratulations Mr. Gordon! WPHS is really proud to have you on its faculty. We realize the hard work and effort that you have put forth for our benefit and for the benefit of our community.
            Teachers Play Role
                                        Of Summer Students
Fran Ussery
Although most WPHS students spent the summer basking in the sun on one of Florida's many beaches or enjoying the freshness of the cool mountain air, the same story is not true of their teachers. A grat percent of the WPHS faculty returned to the classrooms this summer in order to acquire more knowledge for the benefit of their students.
Mrs. Gimon, bookkeeping and shorthand instructor, took a course in Secretarial Science at FSU in Tallahassee ... Also at FSU was Mr. Groene, on a Science Fellowship program, furthering his Biology as well as his Chemistry program by a course in Bio-Chemistry ... Bootstrap may sound like "horse talk" but it's really horse sense, according to Mrs. Weissenburger, who took a course in double time this summer at Rollins. ... Mr. Weissenburger said he stayed home and took care of things because he felt things needed care ...
New Teacher
If you don't know, you must be "way out." It's Mr. Appleman, the new Chemistry teacher.
This welcome addition to our faculty comes to us fresh from Penn State. He likes W.P.H.S. very much, but makes no comment, as yet, on the students.
Aside from Chemistry, he will be coaching our J.V. Football Team and will also replace Mr. Wilson as coach for our Tennis Team.
Miss McGill brought back an "A" in Calculus from the western state of Colorado where she attended the University of Denver. Miss McGill, our Physical Education Teacher, is obtaining the credits needed in Florida for a math instructor. She also feels that calculus is a very practical course ... Mr. Grove was in Boulder, Colorado this summer, at the University of Colorado. This year Mr. Grove's Biology classes are one of the hundred and seventeen schools in the nation under an experimental Biochemstry course. Edgewater, Jones High, and WPHS are the only schools in this county ... Mr. Dillion's Physics classes are under a program similar to Mr. Grove's. It is a new system that has never before been experienced at WPHS.
Well, students, how do you feel? See ... they really worked hard, and it wasn't for themselves, but for you-know-who. Why not be a lilttle more appreciative this year? It might do you some good!!!
Successful  B. E.  Day
On August 24th the local Winter Park businessmen, in cooperation with the county school board, participated in the annual B.E. (Business Education) Day. Each teacher was given a choice of twenty-six businesses to visit. Here the teacher and businessmen discussed and shared each other's problems. Some of the places visited were Holloway Concrete, General Guaranty Insurance Company, Winter Park Telephone, and several of the local banks.
The hallowed grounds of Winter Park High School have been graced by a new addition, and a beautiful one it is! Students are having the time of their lives, walking through the freshly painted corridors and peering through the decorative doors in the backs of the rooms.
Built by John Thomas Watson, A1A, the new wing includes a home-ec. suite, 3 biology labs, and 8 regular classrooms. It was started last October, and students and faculty have been hopefully watching it develop. There are still a few finishing touches to be made, such as tops for the sinks in the labs, but, other than that, it is complete.
Beside this new wing, covered walkways have been added. These walkways are a welcomed addition as many of last year's rain drenched students can tell you. Four new offices have also been constructed. These are located on the ground floor of the main building, across from the office. The guidance counselors are using these offices for both attendance and guidance.
The $150,000 wing is contemporary architecture and adds a beautiful touch to the campus. Of course, it wasn't built to add beauty, it was built to house the overflow of students that prevailed last year and is worse this year. Winter Park is getting to be a large school, with over 1,000 students, and the new wing has paid for itself in use already. Those of us who staggered to school at 7:30 on the early session last year really appreciate this addition! Let's keep it looking brand new, and enjoy our bright spacious classrooms. We're all worked hard for them.
