"WE HONOR THE TRUTH"
VOL. XXVI NO. 2
WINTER PARK, FLORIDA
SEPTEMBER 22 , 1960
S. C.   ASSEMBLY   INTRODUCES   ORGANIZATIONS
Thank You
          Elks Club

Have you noticed any new addition to Winter Park High School, besides the new building and new offices? If you have, each new addition was given to the school, compliments of the Winter Park Elks Club.
Of course, this new addition is the American flag in each room of the school. These newly designed fifty star flags, were given not only to Winter Park High School, but also to six other schools in this area.
Those schools were: Park Avenue Elementary, Lakemont Elementary, Brookshire Elementary, Maitland Elementary, Maitland Junior High, and Glenridge Junior High Schools. A total of about 156 new flags in all, were given to these schools.
The whole student body and faculty wishes to thank the Elks Club and especially Gerald Blessing, the flag program chairman, for their civic minded activities. THANK YOU ELKS CLUB.

STUDENT  COUNCIL  PRESENTED
          SCHOOL  CLUBS  TO  STUDENT  BODY
Judy Teague
Friday, Sept. 9, the Student Council sponsored an assembly to acquaint the Student Body with the organizations of W.P.H.S. A representative from each club was allowed a two minute period to give information to the pupils of the opportunities offered them.
The assembly was presided over by Bill McGinnis Student Council President. Honor Society was represented by Larry Elam, one of the most outstanding students in the school. For the Hi-Y, Chip Schram made a very inspiring speech, as did Moreen Doggett for the Tri-Hi-Y. Always an organization to be respected, the Campus Crusaders sent Susan Carter to pull for them; and this club does invite boys to membership. Coming back to the old home front, our Editor-in-Chief, Ann Spaulding, gave pints on the Wi-Pa-Hi-Sc.
The language clubs also had a say, although in English for once. For the Latin Club, Jean Bradford; Spanish Club, Bill Phillips; French Club, Perky McKim; all with very fine speeches. For the boys, the Wheel Club was represented by Chan Muller and the Key Club by Richard Winslow.
Occupational groups were not ignored by a long shot. The Future Nurses, Future Teachers, and the Future Homemakers of America were there by way of Clara Herald, Donna Newberry, and Patricia Cooke, respectively. Also, Bobby Little speaking for D.C.T.
Moving on to sports, the female side for once, Karen Kane displayed the G.A.A., and Suzie Miller the Pep Club. The Judo Club was in full swing with Jim Fleming; and for the Science Club, Greg Holland gave a speech.
Two Club speakers thought it wise to define their club names to the audience; Linda Schmidt and her Thespians and Mark Loeb with the National Forensic League.
Winter Park wishes to thank the Student Council for its time and effort spent in bringing us this worth-while program. It has helped many decide how to plan the rest of their time at school in the most interesting and educational activities.
All students are encouraged to join a club.

Word For
         The Week

Contrary to popular student and faculty opinion, the rather poor-taste in art work painted on the hallowed halls of W.P.H.S. was not performed by present inmates. It seems some real "toughies" of last year's class felt the need to leave a Senior gift (the class of '60 just plain forgot to leave one last year)!!!!
SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED!! Promptly at 8:15 our own Larry "Satchmo" Elam plays the flag-raising tune while "old glory" is hoisted up the pole.
Seems Mr. Groene was bicycling by when "Satch" started his tooting. In order to show the proper reverence, Mr. Groene dropped his bike, took off his well known hat, and stood at attention. I understand Mr. Wilson (also present) was temporarily blinded by the mirrored reflection!! However, Mr. Groene reports that he received a little of his own medicine in return!!!
Just kidding gang!! Sure am glad those fellows can take a joke ... at least we hope they can!!!

Back to School
Winter Park High School has a new report card system that regular violators will find hard to beat. It is set up to boost not only the scholastic standing of the pupil, but to improve work and behavior habits. The report card will be mailed directly home to the parents in a buncle of six different sheets, one for each subject.
Other than 16 personal items which the faculty will check off as they see fit, the grading system will remain unchanged. Among these items listed are: uses time well; too many absences; wastes time, indifferen; does not come for teacher's help; shows interest and desire to work; creates a disturbance in class; and many others created to help the student. This new system will show good characteristics as well as bad, and should be looked upon as a guide to improving the students and their grades.

---- Mr. Wilson ----
Welcome to the Winter Park High students!
The forthcoming academic year will be for all of you, we trust, a year of genuine happiness and worthy achievement. May it also serve as a constant stimulus and challenge for the years ahead.
We hope that everyone will be aware, as they engage in their activities and studies individually and collectively, that they represent Winter Park High School. It is our hope that you will at all times be faithful to the discipline and ideals that have been set up for you here at your school. We know that you, as well as we, want to be able to say that the 1960-1961 year was "our school's finest".
