     2nd Annual Winter Park
                          Decathlon Track - Field Meet
Chip Schram
Many of us might say that we had a very slow summer, but there are a few of us that might say we had a very fast summer. Among them are past grads Mike Mosher, Marshall Johns, Tommy Morris, John Ricketson, and John Meyers. These young men were among the twenty-eight who placed in the Winter Park High Decathlon for Track and Field. Those representing Winter Park High were Leslie King and Pat Phillips.
A Decathlon is an event where track and field men enter ten different events to see who is the best all-around track and field man.
Schools from all over the area were entered. Those represented were Boone, Colonial, Glenridge Junior High, Apopka Junior High, Cherokee Junior High and Florida Military Academy. The colleges represented were U. of Del., F.S.U., O.J.C., U. of Fla., Furman University, and even Orlando Air Force Base had contenders.
Nine records were broken and one was tied. Record breakers were, in most cases, W.P.H.S. representatives, past and present.
These were: Mike Mosher, Shot Put, 53' 9-3/4" W.P. Marshall Johns, High Jump, 5.6 U. of Del.
Winner of the Decathlon was Larry Evans with a total of 4,780 pts. Evans placed in every event except the 100 yd. dash and broke one record. The record broken was in the high jump. He was tied
by three other boys, Marshall Johns, of U. of Del., and Glen Martin of Colonial High School.
Second place was Mike Mosher with a total of 1,410 pts. Mike broke two records this year and placed in six events out of ten. An interesting fact in the Decathlon is that Mike and Larry tied each other in this even just one year earlier in 1959, each having a total of 3,390 pts.
Leslie King, a star track and field man at Glenridge last year, placed ninth in the meet, which is quite an accomplishment for a man of his age and grade. Leslie finished with a total of 3,320 pts., and Pat Phillips, our only other Winter Park man of the first twenty-eight finished with a total of 2,260 pts. And 20th place.
Coach Mosher, head coach at the Decathlon, said that all the boys at the meet showed fine sportsmanship at all times and did a fine job representing their school on the field. Those Coaches helping Coach Mosher at the meet were: Coach Orr, Coach Vickers, and Mr. Shearin of the Winter Park Recreation Center. Two other coaches present were from Memorial and Cherokee Junior Highs.
The third annual Winter Park Decathlon will be held next summer with the same events and we hope the same enthusiasm evidenced this year.
Open Letter To Seniors
Seniors, tomorrow is the first pep rally of your senior year. It will take place during the sixth period, and, since most of you seniors only have 5 subjects, it will only add time to your Friday schedule. Many of you have already decided to skip the rally -- why is it that you don't want to come??
The main purpose of a pep rally is to pep up the football team. Our football players have sweated through practice after practice just to show you -- their fellow students, that they want to, and can, win not only their first game, but the games later in the season.
Our band, too, has put in long hours practicing so it can add its part to Winter Park's display of school spirit.
Your varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders have worked hard, and they, too, will be at the pep rally yelling with you, for the team and for a real show of school spirit! Won't you yell with them? Remember, you're a Wildcat now -- so "roar" like one!
By the way, why don't you people who have cars offer to take your friends to the game? Most of them will be willing to chip in fifty cents or so to help with the gas bill, and wouldn't it be great to bring a whole carload of kids to the first game?!!!

- News Chacer -
August thirty-first rolled around and with it -- summer passed away, at least for another nine months.
Those glorious months, June, July, and sizzling August, brought with their coming many summer traditions.
Throughout these months, students, with or without their parents, traveled around "Sunny Florida", neighboring states, and even places of foreign intrigue.
There was boating, skiing, rain, trips to the beach, walks down the Daytona boardwalk, rain, a few picnics where the ants consumed more food than the picnickers; rain again, rounds of golf on rather damp golf courses; good times at the Youth Center, back-yard bar-b-ques, parties, television re-runs, part-time jobs with soon-spent pay; hot-weather dates at the drive-in, which included battles with miserable insects dubbed "mosquitoes", and there was more.
- Library  News -
Hey cats, have you been to our library yet? All you students who were here last year know about the wide selection of books to be found there, but have you seen any of the many new ones which have been added?
For the benefit of all the newcomers to W.P.H.S. who may not know "what's what" in the library, here are some vital statistics.
There are approximately 4,000 books for your reading pleasure. This covers fiction, nonfiction, biography, and autobiography. Also, for added help and convenience, there are over 1,000 reference books for your benefit and use.
Other features of the library are the availability of 25-30 news magazines and lending periodicals. For the student or students who are interested in the alumni of W.P.H.S. there are copies of past annuals as well as ones from various colleges through the country.
These are just a few facts about our multi-volumed library. Let's hope you will really use your library because it is here for YOU.

- News Chacer - (Continued.....)
The Fourth of July brought with it the "Miss Maitland Contest", fireworks (loud, weren't they?), watermelon cuts and too many seeds, more bar-b-ques, and dances where girls in gay, swirling dresses danced with boys wearing Continental pants and sun-tanned faces.
Not only did August bring us the opening of school, but with it, football practice (hot out there, fellows?), homework, majorette drills, cheerleading practice, and all of the other activities which go hand in hand with school days.
For all of you who are new at Winter Park, w old-timers welcome you. -- L.A.
