GLENRIDGE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
NOVEMBER 19,1957

To help our students in their preparation for the school years ahead, we sent this survey question to our last year's ninth graders after their first marking period in high school: IN WHAT WAY COULD THE NINTH GRADE HAVE BETTER PREPARED YOU FOR HIGH SCHOOL?

We think you will find their answers important guideposts for the rest of the year.

LOIS RAYL: One of the most important things a student has to learn is to think for himself. We do the work, then it is explained. If the students were broken into this before hand it would certainly make things easier.

Learn to follow instructions. Many teachers will not accept work unless it is done exactly as the directions say.

Listening in class is essential. Reading faster would be helpful. The amount we are required to read is way above what we had to read at Glenridge.

BOB SUTPHEN: Last year we griped about the little homework we had. When we got a taste of the work in high school we wish that we had listened to our teachers last year and were better prepared.
SANDRA WOLSEY: Learn better study methods; have representatives from high school come and talk to 9th graders about what is ahead. Get used to more homework even on game nights.
LINDA REMEZ: Teachers should assign more reading. There is a lot of reading required in high school. Learn to give up some activities and devote more time to studying. Listen in class and learn to take notes. Stiffen up the language classes. Things are really rough over here.
NANCY DUNDEE: Teachers should give more homework. If you are taking a language, don't fail to get a good background.
SANDRA SCONYERS: Teachers should aim for high scholastic standards from ninth grade on, as college credits are started in the ninth grade.
JEAN MASON: More importance should be placed on scholastic ability and not so much emphasis on sports.
ELLEN DELIND: I think it should be harder to get good grades... an "A" should be from 96 to 100. More work should be covered in the ninth grade.
JACK KRAUSE: Students should have more individual attention and counseling when they start to get behind.
DIANE HEDGES: Students taking foreign language should study it first every night while they are still fresh. All teachers should make sure they finish the books for the grade otherwise students do not have the background they are expected to have.
HARRIET PEACOCK: More literature should be taught in the ninth grade. Also, students should be urged to take science.
CHARLOTTE HENDERSON: Any students taking ninth grade science should study hard because they will need the background for biology.
LARRY EICHER: There should be no grading on the curve. They don't do that in high school.
SONDRA FOX: Language is giving me the most difficulty. I did not study hard enough in ninth grade to get a good foundation. Those who plan to take World History ha better do well in civics.
MARY JO STRNAD: Get used to more homework. Teachers could better prepare us for high school by making good grades hard to get.
JUDY WELLINGER: Extra credit should not be encouraged. Learn to dig the material for yourself. Over here the teachers don't tell you what to prepare for on the tests. I don't think anyone but straight A students should sign up for 6 subjects. If you get a study hall don't waste your time.
LORALEE SMITH: Develop good study habits. Pay attention in class and take good notes. Don't get into too many outside activities. Don't take more than five subjects...You will need a study hall.
JEAN SIAS: Time is precious, use it to good advantage. You'll hear your parents and teachers say that a lot. Don't laugh, next year you'll wish you had studied.
NANCY GEISLER: If you don't understand, ask questions. Get all of your homework done every night.
JUDY DUCKWORTH: We should have learned to accomplish more homework. Also how to take notes in class.
