THE KILT
March 18, 1958
The Glenridge Varsity basketball team compiled many statistics as Orange County Junior High Champs.
Frank Ferguson was the season's high scorer with 99 points for a 7.8 per game average. Next in scoring were Richard Giannini and Rusty Doolittle with 88 each for a 6.3 average per game. Dewey scored 8 points for a 5.7 average.
Over the season Glrndige scored a total of 430 points for an average of 31 points per game. The Lion's opponents scored a total of 321 points or 23 points per game.
The Varsity team had 506 field goal attempts and made 158 for an average of 31%. Out of 240 free throws attempted Glenridge made 124 for a 52% average.
The Varsities final record was 12 wins and 2 losses.
The Glenridge Jayvees were 8th grade Orange County champs and recorded 12 wins 0 losses.
Gary Houmes was high scorer for the Jayvee team with 114 points for a 9.5 average per game. Bill Collier was next with 58 points for a 4.8 average. Other high scorers were Clark Lambert, Bill Dick and Bob Mobley with 55, 50, and 46 points to their credit.
Clark Lambert grabbed the most rebounds with a total of 78. Gary Houmes had 76 rebounds. Bill Dick came down with 54.
The Jayvees scored 443 points in 12 games of a 36.9 points a game. Opponents scored 204 for an average of 17 per game. The team made 36.7% of their shots.
172 free throws were attempted and 75 were made for a 43.6% average.
Women teachers and girl members of the "G" Club battled the annual Teacher Student Volleyball game before a merry mob on March 12.
Both teams were in rare form. This included members of their respective cheering squads, some of whom possessed forms so rare as to be actual raw.
Playing techniques were trained to a fine perfection and guaranteed to be fuddle the opponents. For example, Mrs. Hobbs' serve which ends with the server lying flat on the court, is one never seen by this writer before. And Mona Barnhart, playing for the "G" Club, managed to confuse everyone including herself when she hit the ball straight up and it came down and hit her on the head.
The teachers won the first game 27-15. The second game was called because of rain and none of the players wanted to lose their curl.
It is only fitting that a new Glenridge Teacher anthem should be reproduced here. It was composed by Mr. Ansley when he should have been teaching, and represents the extent to which some teachers will go to bemuse their students.
I've been working here at Glenridge
Every dog gone day.
I've been working here at Glenridge
With hardly any pay
Today is Glenridge's birthday
And we are here to say
C'mon, G.T.s, sock 'em.
Glenridge teachers, hurray!
