THE KILT
March 18, 1958
Dear Pam:
How can a fellow earn $10 in 10 days? My allowance is only .75 per week.
DESPERATE FOR DOUGH
Dear Desperate for Dough:
As I figure it all you need to do is earn about 90 cents a day. This should not be hard for an enterprising fellow. Look around your neighborhood for the yards that need some spring cleaning, and go after the job.
Dear Pam:
Everytime I get interested in a boy, my best friend starts flirting with him and takes him away from me. When I finally give up and stop liking him so does she. What can I do?
FRIEND OF A FLIRT
Dear Friend of a Flirt:
This is a friend? You'd better define what you mean by a friend.
There are two ways to look at this situation. First, you must be doing a terrific selling job on these boys, and your friend must have great faith in your taste. Then what happens? What's the gal got that makes it possible for her to swipe the fellows? Study her technique.
Next time you discover a dream boat, keep your mouth shut, and concentrate on selling the boy on you.
Dear Pam:
My best friend is very short tempered. Every time she is in a bad mood she takes it out on me. Afterwards she apologizes and thinks everything should be ok. But the hurt is still there.
TEMPER TARGET
Dear Temper Target:
Get out of firing range. Your best friend needs to learn some self control., and you need to have new sense of dignity about yourself.
By allowing your friend to use you as an emotional punching bag you are contributing to her immaturity. If she is to learn the cause and effect in human relations she may as well realize that when she treats you badly she is leaving a debit in her friendship account.
Dear Pam:
My teachers and friends are always criticizing me for primping in class. What do you think?
ALL FOR IT
Dear All For It:
Primping in class is distracting for those watching the process. But more than that is is a dead giveaway about you. If you have to keep looking into the mirror to make sure you are still there, chances are you have convinced yourself that something is missing.
The secrets of your good grooming, and they should be your secrets, must be practiced in private. In public you should concentrate on the qualities of personality that make you attractive. I mean friendliness, enthusiasm, and co-operation.

Dear Pam:
My parents never let me out of the house. They think I should always be working. I have to do twice as much as any of my friends. Don't I deserve a little free time?
SALLY THE SLAVE
Dear Sally the Slave:
It may be that your friends have to little to do at home - and twice as much as they do would be a normal amount for a girl of your age.
The most important part of this picture is the way you are feeling. A sense of being put-upon or persecuted is a dangerous and negative attitude. It will ruin the joy you should find in living.
Get your work done as cheerfully and efficiently as possible - then approach your parents for the free time you deserve. If they still don't see it your way, remember - your days under parental domination are relatively few. Soon you will be guiding your own life.
I hope you remember the feelings you are having now when you have a daughter of your own.
