SPORTS REVIEW

More than 80 candidates turned out when fall training opened for the Glenridge Lions. But if the Lions are expecting to roar louder than they did last year they have their work cut out form them. Last year they rolled up 89 points while the opposition was held to a mere 13. They suffered only one defeat during the year -- a 7-0 heartbreaker to Howard is the last game that decided the Orange County Junior High School competition.
This year's edition of the Glenridge team will be almost new. Only two letter men, Gene Mooney and Frank Ferguson, return to brave the storm for the Plaids. They are the team's CO-captains Frank is a 186 pounder who does double duty as both end and tackle. While Gene, a 119 pound quarterback, is expected to be the sparkplug for the Glenridge machine.

Coach Bob Mosher announced that he was anticipating a heavier line this year and a back field comparable with the past. Mr. Mosher said the back field would take to the air a lot this season and end Coach Vickers has been concentrating the ends on down field blocking with a strong serial approach.

"But, the stability of the team, ours or any other, is on the ground. Grinding out yardage is what wins the games. We will be depending on the superior punch from the line to open holes for the back field", said Coach Mosher.

There is no position that is not open for an ambitious player who shows that he wants to play football. No ninth grader has a special ticket for the starting lineup. For example, Ned Whitner, 162 pound seventh grader, is rapidly carving a niche for himself in the Lion backfield.

At the quarterback position, Carl Kettles, 140 pound ninth grader, is in tight competition with scrappy Gene Mooney for the first call opening night with Memorial on Oct. 3 at Harper-Sheppard Field.

In the halfback spot four aspirants are vying for starting position: Julius Mullins, 140 pounds; Ray Meyers, 135 pounds; Bill Buttery, 128 pounds,; and Steve Toothaker, 142 pounds, who is also making a bid for the fullback post.
Whitner and 128 pounder, Charles Matthews are also eyeing the fullback post.
In the line Rusty Doolittle, Chuck Butler and Frank Ferguson are nip and tuck for end positions.
Big boy Clark Lambert, who squeaks the scales at a cool (?) 193 pounds, seems to have earned a place as tackle. Paul Berne, and his 175 pounds, is ample tackle material too.
In guard positions Vernon Duncan, and Max Morris show good potential. While Johnny Cash and Pete Pierson are fighting it out for the pivotal position of center.
Coach Mosher issued a grim warning against over confidence for the first game against Memorial. "They allowed us only one score last year. They could be better this year."
