GLENRIDGE
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL |
NOVEMBER
5 , 1957 |
|
|
Physical
Fitness
tests were
given to
4,264 U.S.
school children
aged 6-16.
Out of these
57.9% failed.
European
children
were given
the same
test. Only
8.7% failed
out of 2,879
tested.
What
is the reason
for this
poor showing
by American
children
-- the best
fed and
biggest
children
in the world?
Experts
say this
physical
unfitness
is caused
by a life
of ease.
A life in
which few
children
walk or
do heavy
chores,
such as
chopping
wood, harvesting
hay, etc.
President
Eisenhower
believes
that the
growing
rate of
juvenile
delinquency
may be caused
by young
people not
working
off excess
energy in
chores and
sports.
He has organized
a council
of Youth,
headed by
Vice President
Nixon, that
is already
at work
with the
program.
If
you are
interested
in discovery
how you
rate in
physical
fitness,
try the
following
test and
grade yourself. |

THE
TARTAN
TATTLER |
WHICH
EIGHTH
GRADE
ENGLISH
teacher
dittoed
a
test
backwards,
but
decided
her
class
were
far
too
unfamiliar
with
the
language
to
be
expected
to
decipher
it? |

THREE
NINTH
GRADE
BOYS
WERE
SEEN
trying
to
crash
a
hayride
the
other
night.
Well,
Carl,
Vernon,
and
Sam,
if
you
must
crash
a
party
a
hayride
sounds
like
the
softest
one
to
attempt. |

A
CERTAIN
SCIENCE
TEACHER
has
his
students
busily
tearing
apart
their
furnaces
to
see
what
makes
them
work.
Can't
you
bet
the
parents
love
it! |

MR.
KENT
HAS
ASKED
HIS
6th
period
civics
class
to
make
a
schedule
of
their
daily
activities.
If
these
come
in
entirely
uncensored,
we'll
be
glad
to
publish
them. |
|
Which
fourth
period
class
had
a
nail
scratching
contest?
We
understand
the
teacher
is
getting
jumpy
about
all
the
coverage
his
classes
receive
in
the
Kilt.
He
shouldn't.
The
students
claim
they
not
only
have
fun,
they
learn,
too. |

JULIUS
MULLINS,
RAY
MYERS,
MAX
MORRIS
and
CHARLIE
MATTHEWS
went
looking
for
volunteers
to
pick
weeds.
The
cause
was
worthy
but
their
technique
in
recruiting
slightly
undemocratic.
They
backed
their
victims
up
against
a
wall
and
made
them
repeat:
"I,
a
student
at
Glenridge,
will
volunteer
to
pick
weeds
during
activity
period."
The
system
worked. |

WHAT
NINTH
GRADE
GIRL
WITH
INITIALS
M.S.
was
heard
screaming,
"Get
off
my
crinoline!" |
|
IN
MR.
BENSON'S
fourth
period
class
they
have
been
trying
to
turn
a
yellow
flower
blue.
Results
--
The
flower
is
stiff
and
dead.
P.S.
It
is
still
yellow. |

WE
HEAR
COL.
WOOD'S
ROOM
7-7
has
challenged
the
school
in
the
magazine
drive.
Mr.
Wood's
room
won
last
year,
you
may
remember. |

WHICH
TWO
GLENRIDGE
TEACHERS
were
picked
up
trying
to
get
into
school
on
Halloween
night?
First
the
patrol
boys
chased
their
car,
then
the
law
stepped
in.
They
report
that
they
felt
like
public
enemies
number
one
and
two. |

Susan
Chace
gave
one
of
the
weirdest
slumber
parties
on
October
25.
They
gathered
in
the
backyard,
made
a
bonfire,
and
sat
around
and
sang
songs.
Then,
wearing
blue
jeans
and
sweat
shirts,
they
went
in
and
slept
on
the
kitchen
floor.
Those
who
claim
to
have
enjoyed
this
poor
excuse
for
a
Simmons
were:
Sandy
Flowers,
Sandy
Cash,
Jeannie
Jones,
Lynn
Ricks,
Judy
Teague,
Judy
Reding,
Robin
McKenzie.
On
Saturday
the
same
girls
went
to
the
show
carrying
two
pillows,
two
blankets,
and
a
suitcase.
The
movie
was
pretty
crowded. |
