LOOKING  BACK  IN  SPORTS

By Chip Schram

The Wildcat football team this year was very green compared to those of previous years. The Cats lost a total of ten games. The defense was strong this year but the offense was not up to par. John Cash made the O.B.C. All-Stars and Julius Mullins broke the tackle record set by Jim

Top Principal --
Top School
Certainly one of the busiest men around school is our principal, Mr. Osburn C. Wilson. This year marks his twelfth at W.P.H.S. When he first be-
came principal, W.P.H.S. was a six-year school with an enrollment of 600. Our present enrollment as a three-year school is 1,000.
Mr. Wilson taught history in Madison and Arcadia, Florida previous to coming to W.P.H.S. He attended Wofford College in South Carolina, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree, and Vanderbilt in Tennessee, where he received his Master's.
Strange as it may seem, Mr. Wilson really does have spare time. He lists reading, tennis, and lawn mowing among his avocations. He lists, empha-
tically and with no reservation, gum chewing as his "pet peeve."
He believe that this is one of the best grad-
uating classes since he has been principal. Quoting Mr. Wilson, "W.P.H.S. is one of the best high schools in the state, though I may be a little bit prejudiced."
Under Mr. Wilson's leadership, W.P.H.S. has become a nationally recognized high school, one whose students are sought by the top universities.
Mr. Wilson indeed has a record of achieve-
ment that places him in first ranks of outstanding school administrators. The school record speaks for itself.
The WI-PA-HI-SC salutes you, Mr. Wilson, as our principal.
Thompson last year. Next Year's team looks strong; the boys know what its like to lose, so look out for plenty of revenges.
In basketball the Cats won 13 and lost 14. They
won the Elk's Tangerine Tournament by beating Bishop Moore and placed third in the Orange Belt Conference. The biggest romp of the year was against St. Leo which the cagers won 82-31. Outstanding incidents were Carl Dunn's 37 points against Bishop Moore and Gary Houme's long shot from behind the mid-court line against Wildwood.
The tennis team was undefeated in both County and O.B.C. play. This was the first year for the team to be active in competition of any kind. The team went to the state meet in Gainsville. Remember how Chan Muller cut his nose? If not, just ask him! He'll be glad to tell you the whole story.
The track team this year was first in the O.B.C. and also first in the district with 13 wins and 3 losses. This was the finest team the school has ever had as they set a total school record of 1,074 and 1/2 points. Four new school records were established and one state record was broken at the State meet. That event was the mile relay team made up of Ray Myers, Greg Holland, Larry Elam and Eric Firchow. The Wildcat Track team placed fifth in state competition.
This year's swimming team lost only 2 meets and won 9. They placed second in the O.B.C. tournament. The girls placed third in state competition and the boys came in eighth. The girls won a first place in the 200 yd. medley relay at the state meet.
The baseball team this year won the O.B.C. Championship and lost only four games in comparison to 23 wins. Allen Burris had the highest batting record, higher than the usual .379. Terry Williams hit a grand slam home run against Apopka in the Cat's first game against that team. The second encounter with Apopka was the play-off in the sub-group tournament. The game had to be called after five innings, as the Cats smeared the visiting "Blue Darters" 19-0. From here the Cats went to participate in state competition. Total runs at this writing for the year -- 165 on 190 hits.
