Introducing...Maurine
Doggett
Maurine is the daughter
of the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Caxton Doggett, 232 Osceola
Court. She is a National Merit Scholarship finalist and
will graduate with the class of 1961 from Winter Park
High School. Maurine is president of Tri-Hi-Y; vice president
of Spanish Club; Member of Honor Society, Latin Club,
GAA and tennis team. Her hobbies are playing tennis and
canoeing. Maurine will enter Duke University and Major
in Sociology. |
|
Doggett,
Maurine . . . Maurine's pet peeve is being called "Molasses"
when she is moving too slow. Her secret ambition is to
fly a helicopter. This senior gal likes to watch football
and play tennis. Maurine is a home state baby as she was
born in Eustis, December 20, 1943. Her favorite food is
charcoal broiled steak and to serve as a chaser she 'guzzels"
a lemon-orange slush. Future plans are college, where
she will major in sociology.

Happiest
memory: No
single memory stands out. I was pretty shy and inhibited
during those years. But I do suddenly remember skinny-dipping
one night with . . (come on girls, fess up) and a slumber
party during which we wandered down the main street of
Winter Park in our nighties.
Bio: Duke University, 1961-65. Worked
in New Haven and at Brown University during next four
years while married to a graduate student. When marriage
failed, went to Union Theological Seminary in New York
City (1969-72), got MDiv degree (psychiatry and religion
major), did year of clinical training in Kansas (chaplaincy),
then came to Philadelphia as co-director of campus ministry
at University of Pennsylvania. After six years, did a
one-year full-time training program in marriage, family
and sex therapy at Marriage Council of Philadelphia, and
since then have worked as a psychotherapist for a pastoral
counseling agency in the greater Philidelphia region.
Married again in 1975 to Jim Thacker, a health educator
from Indiana. We bought an old house in the University
area and lived there for fifteen years, adopting two boys
from Ecuador. Moved last summer to the suburbs, Elkins
Park, into another old house. Planted my first garden
ever this spring and loved it. After years of feminism
and activism and professional development, I'm enjoying
working part-time and raising kids. Tennis has continued
to be a life-long involvement, and both our boys are playing
now.
Future plans and goals: You mean
besides becoming an empty nester and retired? All our
empty nest friends are having a ball - looks good to me!

Re: WPHS Alums - Then and Now - Class of 1961

From: Maurine Doggett
Wow, thanks for getting my picture up
so quickly. I have just spent several hours perusing the
website. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the
good work you and the others have done and continue to
do in updating and maintaining the site. It has been such
fun reading about and seeing so many classmates. The more
I looked and read, the more memories came back -- I remembered
so many more people than I thought I did.
As
for an update on me -- for the past four years I have
been working as a hospice chaplain. Our 23 year old son
Jorge is in his last year at the Fashion Institute of
Technology in New York and our 19 year old John is back
at home with us after a year on his own, working full-time
in the restaurant business. Jim, my husband, still works
as a health educator. We have discovered the Pacific Northwest,
and have vacationed there for the past 2 years (Seattle,
Vancouver, Victoria, Olympic Peninsula, Portland, Oregon
coast). We love our neighborhood, have sunk deep roots
in the Philadelphia area, and have no plans to change
much as retirement approaches, though of course life has
its own plans for us.
Again,
thanks. If I unearth any pictures of interest, I'll send
them to you.
Maurine |
Maurine
traveled 1,000 miles to attend the 50th class reunion.
She has two children. Her favorite WPHS teacher was
Mrs. Blickman because of her high expectations. Maurine
lists occasionally playing the guitar, Sudoku, 'messing'
in the yard, fitness activities, and hanging out with
spouse in coffee shops reading. Her favorite sport is
playing tennis and watching most any sport. She has
a dog by the name of "Charlie Brown". Maurine
lists her favorite vacation as a three-way tie between
Vancouver, BC, Alaska and Prague. Left on her bucket
list is Australia (for starters).
If we are reading correctly Maurine's response to funniest
practical joke she wrote "...memorable (since
I remember it) - on the beach MYF retreat, stealing
boys jocks and putting them in the freezer. Funny at
the time." An honor shared with us that Maurine
received was being the first woman co-director of Christian
Association at University of Pennsylvania. Her favorite
WPHS memory was an overnight at which "we girls
snuck out and walked down Main Street (WP's main street)
at 3 am in our nighties.
