Subject: WPHS Alums Class of 1961
Marcia (DeMent) Hulbert found me by
e-mail a couple of years ago, and she wrote to me today
and gave me the address of your great website for WPHS
Alums Class of 1961. I see my name (William McGinnis)
is on the missing list. I'm alive and well and living
in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D. C.
After graduating from Northwestern in 1965, I spent six
years working for newspapers. Then I ran into personal
and marital problems, dropped out of the world, and spent
eighteen years driving taxicabs in the Washington area.
With two marriages, two divorces, and two grown daughters.
I'm now night foreman of a taxicab
repair shop. I also have several websites, including www.AutomobileDiagnostics.com,
www.CommitteeForTheGoldenRule.org, and www.InternetDailyChapel.org.
I hope to see you all at the forty-fifth
year reunion, if not before.
Yours,
Bill McGinnis WPHS, 1961 |

Happiest
memory: (Had to think
about this) I guess it would have to be being chosen to
be drum majorette for the band my senior year. It had
been a goal I wanted to achieve since I was about eight
years old.
Funniest/weirdest coincidence: Not really
funny or weird, but a coincidence. When we were living
in Charleston, SC, Linda and George Mayo were also living
there. Their son, Scott, and our daughter, Nancy, were
born just twenty days apart.
Bio: Graduated from Furman University in
1965. Married Fred Pollard in 1966. Fred is a general
dentist in Travelers Rest, SC. We live in Charleston,
SC, for four years while Fred attended dental school then
moved back to Greenville when he went into practice. In
1987 I completed my masters degree in special education
from Furman.

Hope
you have had a good holiday. Just to catch you up on happenings
around here:
I retired from teaching
in July and the first of August we became puppy raisers
for a guide dog. My direction for teaching just took a
slight twist. Ivy, a black lab, is now 7 months old. She
goes everywhere with us so she can become accustomed to
the variety of places she might go with her blind owner.
I definitely have not had time to miss going to a job
everyday, I have one right here at home. We will have
her until next October at which time she will return to
the kennel for her official harness training. That is
a 6 month process. After that is complete, she will be
placed with her new owner and they will be trained together
for a month. The dogs are given free of charge to a South
Carolina resident. We will be able to meet the person
and have occasional contact even after she is placed.
God answered a prayer when he allowed her to be placed
with us. It has been an exhausting experience, but wonderful
at the same time.
Happy New Year! Perky |
Perky
and her husband Fred traveled 525 miles to attend the
50th class reunion. They have two children and three
grandchildren. Perky lists her favorite WPHS teacher
as "...Edgar Williams, truly loved and respected
each of his students, provided opportunities for growth,
encouraged us when we failed, and cheered our successes."
Her hobbies include gardening and coffee with friends.
Perky's favorite sport is listed as walking. For her
pets, Perky has listed Ivy, a black Lab and horses Scott,
Jack and Poco. Her favorite vacation spot is the coast
of Maine. Left on Perky's bucket list is a "...return
trip to Israel or the Greek Islands." Her favorite
WPHS memory is her senior year in the WPHS band.
